The Theory of Super Mario: How Mario is the Villain (Part 1)

In 1983, Nintendo, a game company, created Super Mario. It quickly became one of the most popular games of the decade and it has since been released on gaming consoles such as the Wii, Game Boy, the Switch and so on.

Like us, Mario is a human who kills Koopa Troopas (turtle-like creatures), breaks bricks, and defeats Bowser (the villain of the game). However, the internet began to wonder if Mario was the real villain.

In the first level, there is a type of enemy entity called a ‘Goomba'. It is based on a mushroom. All it does is walk around and sometimes falls off cliffs. Whenever Mario touches Goombas, he dies and the game is over. All Mario has to do is to jump on a Goomba’s head to kill it off. But Mario is a murderer. In the Super Mario magazine, the creator of Super Mario, Shigero Mayamoto, said that the Goombas are not villains and are not associated with Bowser either. The only reason Mario dies every time he touches Goombas is because they’re poisonous, something they can't help. That makes the internet think: If the Goombas are innocent, why would Mario kill them?

In the third game, Mario Yoshi, there’s a creature that Mario rides on called Yoshi. It is a green dinosaur wearing red trainers (the team was running out of ideas). It eats enemies like Goombas and Koopa Troopas if Mario orders it to do so. But if you look closer, Mario is actually punching Yoshi’s head. Mayamoto claims that he is in fact pointing, but Mario never puts out his finger...

So, do you think Mario is the hero of the story, or is he a wanted criminal? Give your opinion of this theory! Do you agree or disagree?
