Being Teachers!

For our Year 7 Saxons task, we had to make a lesson talking about disabilities, which is our Key Stage 3 Challenge title, to Mr Williamson’s Year 6 class on Thursday 5 May 2016.

 

During the whole day on Wednesday 4 May 2016, in the morning, after the assembly about our Key Stage 3 Challenge, we went to our house base, which is the classroom of Mr Hallas. Romy, Sheena and Sophie were voted for being leaders of Year 7. Several girls were voted for making the lesson on a Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 document on an apple Mac borrowed from Nanhu library. They also did some research on the internet about any specialist messages about disabilities and one of the creators, Minji, found information about a disabled person with disabilities named Wilma Rudolph. Several other people were voted to create some fun games containing disabled positions for the lesson.

 

On Thursday 5 May 2016, between 10:00 to 11:00, which is the time for lesson two in Primary School, our Year 7 Saxons went to our set Primary School teacher Mr Williamson’s class to give our lesson. We talked about differing abilities with some information made on our Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007. We also prepared some sweets and chocolate for students who won the games we had prepared.

 

 

 

We started off with Romy, Sheena and Sophie giving out post-it notes to ask what they think 'abilities' mean. It seemed that most of them had never seen this word before and were struggling and some of our Year 7 Saxons and their class teaching assistant sort of helped them and gave them hints. As a result of this task, we ended up with a person saying that if you don’t have disabilities, you cannot do anything at all, which sounded like quite a silly definition. 

 

 

 

Afterwards, Angelina, Minji and Sofia ... explained what 'disabilities' are and Minji explained about the disabled person named Wilma Rudolph who she found and researched on the internet.

After giving out the information about disabilities, Anna and her teammates did their games.

 

 

 

How the first game worked is, is that somebody sat on a chair with a blindfold covering his/her eyes middle of a circle with the class around him/her. Below his/her chair, there’s a BSG student identity card. Romy had to pick somebody to go quietly to steal the identity card and the person blindfolded had three chance to guess who stole it and where it has gone. If the blindfolded person guessed it right of who and which direction, he/she gets a sweet or chocolate. This lasted for a while and it seems like students enjoyed it. 

 

 

 

 

Next, students played a game called “Ninja”. Most the students lost their leg(s)/arm(s) by other people chopping out. The games lasted for two rounds of the circle.

 

 

 

 

After the game “Ninja”, students played another game called “Hot Potato”. Students are told that they cannot use their lost leg(s)/arm(s). They have to use their arm(s) that aren’t chopped. They will be given a soft football, which was the hot potato, and they have to pass it to somebody else in three seconds. If the person whom supposed to catch it but the caught failed, they are out and he/she has to sit down. If you lost both of your legs and arms from the last game, Ruth, who was also a games creator, said that if she was him/her, she would pass the ball to somebody else by her head, which sort of happened to a student in this class. At the end of this game, three girls were left with a boy and the three girls made the left over boy out and they started to beat each other which lasted quite a few minutes.

 

 

 

 

After the three fun games, we came to the last game. The students got into pairs, they were given a title of a movie from Romy, and they had to act it out without any voice. Students who were watching the acting had to guess the title of the movie they were acting. Everybody was really desperate to give out their answers by shouting and we ended up with a bunch of noise when a pair was acting. Also, two of the acting pairs were easy and the students who were watching them guessed the correct answer under a minute. It was “The Lion King”, a Disney Movie Studio film and a very famous story like “The Three Little Pigs” and “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Cinderella”.

 

By the end of the lesson, Year 6 students got their iPads, went on kahoot.it, and answered questions about disabilities made by Sheena on creat.kahoot.it. This lasted for about two to three or three and an half minutes.

 

 

 

 

Finally, at the last task of the lesson, everybody was given a post-it note paper by the leaders Sheena, Sophie and Romy. Now, they were given the task to write down the definition of disabilities after the lesson and most students seemed to feel confident about it. Same as the starting task, students were also asked to put their post-it notes paper on the board once they were done writing the definition. Romy read a couple of the definitions and they were different than at the beginning of the lesson. It was a great success!
